The Danger of Panic
This is a unique day and age-this year is unlike any other year that has been seen for many generations-maybe ever.
Is caution unfounded? No. Is sanitation unfounded? No. Is panic unfounded? I don’t know that it is unfounded, but it certainly is doing more harm than good. Why? Panic is dangerous because it causes us to do things that are illogical and often that we will regret-even if we don’t regret them, decisions made in panic have ripple effects. It might be better to take some time to process-to let fear subside-before making decisions. Why wait to make decisions, especially in a time like today? It is better to wait because things often become more clear with time. We might realize that things aren’t as bad as they first appear.
Why do I bring that up today, with reports of death and sickness publicly fear mongered among all of us? I bring it up because there is another issue at hand-one that will likely be bigger in the long run. That is the issue of the economy-the issue of people-the issue of friendships-the issue of society-the issue of fellowship-the issue of healthy interaction. What will happen when small businesses can’t financially recover from being forcibly closed for too long? What will happen when the death toll starts climbing, not from sickness, but from suicide of the severally despressed-or from those who no longer have an escape from an abusive partner?
How about our Constitution? It was put in place because our founders came from a place where such freedom was not permitted-and they fought to put it in place. Let us not lightly forget that.
Yes, the immunocompromised and those who are actually at risk of dying from this should take the precautions needed to stay safe. The rest of society should have been washing their hands anyway. The healthy, fit, and able members of society need to still be supporting society, working, providing for their families. They aren’t going to die from this-and with proper sanitation won’t put the immunocompromised members at risk. Destroying the economy won’t be better in the long run.
I hope everyone who reads this is well, or will become well soon.
